When analyzing any cement manufacturing process, it is evident that one of the most critical steps takes place in the rotary kiln. When it comes to extending the life of this piece of equipment, as well as preventing any disastrous failures, it is imperative that operators understand the condition of the refractory material coating it. Since it is impossible to measure the inside of the kiln, looking at the outer surface is the only way to determine refractory condition. This can be accomplished with infrared technology and specially developed kiln scanning systems.

Le feu et la glace, le chaud et le froid … les extrêmes ont toujours fascinés et défiés les hommes. Différentes techniques et différents appareils on été utilisés à travers âges et efforts pour mesurer et comparer des températures. Par exemple, durant les premiers temps de fabrication des céramiques, la fusion de certains matériaux a été utilisée pour savoir si un seuil donné de température avait été atteint. De manière similaire, le boulanger utilisait un morceau de papier pour appréhender la température de son four.
Un pyromètre infrarouge est étalonné sur un corps noir. Un corps noir est un émetteur d'IR parfait. Il est qualifié par une émissivité de 1,00. Tous les autres corps émettent, à la même température, moins d'énergie que le corps noir. Ils ont tous une émissivité inférieure à 1,00. Par exemple, si l'émissivité d'une surface est de 0,80 cela veut dire qu'elle n'émet que 80% de l'énergie qu'émettrait un corps noir à la même température.
