Thermal Barriers

The rotating evaporative barriers from Fluke Process Instruments are designed specifically for the temperature profiling of cylindrical billets and pipes. These thermal barriers feature a fully sealed construction, which can be quenched without the need for time consuming insulation replacements and costly insulation disposal.

To maximize thermal performance in the smallest possible diameter, these rotating barriers feature a cylindrical water tank encased by a layer of microporous insulation. The central data logger cavity is sealed using compression fittings on mineral-insulated thermocouples.

These thermal barriers are designed to be fitted to the end of test logs or inside pipes to roll through the process, this solution incorporates an innovative mechanical system that prevents water from escaping while allowing steam to exit. These barriers are most used in applications up to 1000°C (1832°F) such as aluminum log homogenizing and steel pipe annealing.

Software

Every Datapaq Insight™ Software product is designed to convert your raw data into meaningful information that can be acted on. All three software options provide a clear user interface, context sensitive help screens and wizards to assist novice users. The ability to change the language and email results directly from software enables you to share information across the plant and across the world, whether you’re on a computer or mobile device.

Datapaq Rotating Thermal Barrier performance

Datapaq Rotational Barrier Application

In most applications, the environmental conditions and process parameters in the furnace – such as temperature, duration and atmosphere – drive thermal barrier selection.

The Rotating Evaporative Thermal Barrier Series is limited to a maximum operating temperature of 1000°C (1832°F) and is intended to be fitted to the end of test logs or inside pipes. Typical applications include:

Aluminum Log Homogenizing

  • Cylindrical rotational thermal barriers are securely fitted to the end of a shortened aluminum log, allowing the Furnace Tracker system to travel through the furnace. Up to 10 thermocouples can be routed within a cavity on the surface of the log and each of the thermocouple tips is placed at a strategic point to measure surface and core temperatures.
  • The data logger is enclosed in a thermal barrier, which is protected by a layer of microporous insulation and a water tank, which ensures the best duration vs. diameter is achieved. The entire system is sealed, protecting the insulation so that the full heating and quenching/cooling cycle can be monitored without the need for insulation replacements.

Steel Pipe Annealing

  • Seamless steel pipes, typically found in the oil and gas industries, must be heat treated to ensure the correct material properties. To obtain this thermal profile, a rotational evaporative thermal barrier is placed inside the pipe, rolling with it as the pipe passes through a walking beam furnace.
  • The data logger is protected by a thermal barrier, allowing thermocouples to be placed at strategic points along the length of the pipe. This enables the data logger to gather temperature uniformity measurements from up to 10 points. Once transferred to our Insight™ Software, the data is translated into actionable analytics that can speed up new product set up times and improve process troubleshooting.

Special and Custom Solutions

The experienced engineering team at Fluke Process Instruments has produced numerous thermal barriers for applications, ranging from temperatures of -40°C to 1350°C (-40°F to 2462°F). Radio telemetry link

Radio telemetry accessory

The Datapaq TP6 radio telemetry system utilizes high temperature radio-frequency technology to allow data transmission from the data logger in real time. As the system travels through the process, product and process temperature data can be viewed, analyzed and reported instantaneously. This technology can be applied to monitoring key thermal processes in most industrial heating applications.
